ASN and IUNS
The American Society for Nutrition became the US Adhering Body to the International Union of Nutritional Sciences in 2008. However, our organizations have collaborated closely for many decades.
At ASN’s annual meeting in 1949, President E.M. Nelson reported on a meeting he had attended in London in June of 1948. The meeting had been convened to consider the formation of an International Union of Nutrition Sciences (IUNS). At this meeting, a tentative constitution and by-laws for the proposed union was prepared and adopted. Application to the International Congress of Scientific Unions was made and acted on in September of 1949.
The IUNS mission is:
-To promote advancement in nutrition science, research and development through international cooperation at the global level.
-To encourage communication and collaboration among nutrition scientists as well as to disseminate information in nutritional sciences through modern communication technology.

International Congress of Nutrition
IUNS has organized International Congresses of Nutrition since 1952. In 1981, the ASN (then known as AIN) administered the International Congress in San Diego, CA (program chair: James Dinning). View the ASN Living Legends featured at the International Congress in 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand.
ASN maintains a competitive travel awards program for outstanding early-career and student investigators currently based in the U.S. The travel awards assist with costs related to attendance at the International Congresses. Funders are asked to provide grants of $3,500. Email us for more information.
The 23rd International Congress of Nutrition (ICN) will be held in Paris, France August 24-29, 2025.
The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) is honored to have been one of three finalists in competition to host the 23rd International Congress of Nutrition. We are incredibly proud of our bid proposal and presentation highlighting:
- ASN’s unmatched depth and breadth of nutrition science experience, organizational capacity and experience in running global nutrition meetings,
- Hawai‘i’s international appeal, U.S. infrastructure and unmatched diversity of cultures, experiences, environment, accommodations, facilities, and attractions; and,
- Our connection with the strong contingent of nutrition scientists deeply rooted in both nutrition and Hawai’i.
ICN participants were enthusiastic and supportive of ASN’s bid to host the 2025 ICN. Our delegates were informed that current U.S. immigration policies, including the travel ban, were causing concerns that seriously undermined our bid. For example, concerns were expressed regarding the ability of young scientists around the world to reliably enter the U.S. We live in challenging times in terms of border control, travel concerns, safety and security. ASN is working with the U.S. travel, meetings & conventions & scientific community to ensure continued access to the U.S. for scientists attending meetings. Brand USA, the US Travel Association and the Meetings Mean Business coalition are working to ensure safe, convenient, open travel into the U.S., and ASN is a proud to be a part of that effort.
ASN congratulates the Société Française de Nutrition and Fédération Française de Nutrition!
